A concrete Funktion-One basement under the A'DAM Toren where the phones go down and the techno and house go all night.

The night (is it house?)

Underground techno, house and melodic house on a Funktion-One rig, in a low-ceilinged concrete basement built for the music rather than the view. Programming is event-driven, so the exact shade of the night depends on who's booked β€” check the RA listing before you go β€” but house and its deeper, more melodic strains sit at the core alongside proper Berlin-leaning techno. A strict no-flash, no-phone-torch dancefloor keeps the focus where it belongs: screens down, eyes closed, dance.

DOOR
Selective but not fashion-obsessed: they care that you're there for the music, not that you're wearing the right label. Entry is refused for suits, dress shirts, football/soccer shirts and any discriminatory apparel. Strict 18+ (bring ID). The no-phone-flash policy is enforced hard β€” pull out a torch on the floor and you're out. You may be searched on the way in.
DRESS
No strict dress code, but come as a clubber, not an office worker β€” suits, dress shirts and football shirts get turned away.
PHOTO
Assume no photos on the floor β€” many clubs cover phone cameras.typical
AGE
18+
CASH
typically €15-30 (higher for ADE, special events & NYE) β€” as of 2026 Β· card
GETTING IN
Buy in advance via Eventix β€” that's your guaranteed way in, and big nights (ADE, NYE, special bookings) sell out. When presale is gone there are limited door tickets, but presale and guestlist queues get priority, so arrive early if you're chancing the door. Need a resale? TicketSwap is the safe route (capped at 120%) β€” avoid random street sellers. The door closes at 04:00 with no entry after, so don't roll up at 4:30 expecting to get in. Getting there is half the fun: take the free GVB ferry from behind Amsterdam Centraal to Buiksloterweg (a few minutes across the IJ) β€” the A'DAM Toren is right at the landing, and Shelter is down the staircase behind a steel door in the basement. Cards only, no cash.

Shelter, Amsterdam

Shelter is Amsterdam-Noord's serious underground club: a concrete, low-ceilinged basement dug in beneath the A'DAM Toren, tuned around a Funktion-One system and a phones-down dancefloor. It's open and firmly on the map in 2026 β€” an ADE 2026 venue and a DJ Mag Top 100 Clubs entry (#90) β€” so this is the real Shelter club, not the unrelated central-city hostel of the same name.

The music. Underground techno, house and melodic house, programmed event by event rather than on fixed resident nights. Which means the exact flavour depends on the booking β€” deeper melodic house one weekend, hammering Berlin-style techno the next β€” so check the Resident Advisor listing before you commit. What's constant is the room: built for sound and darkness, not sightlines.

The door & how to get in. The safe play is an advance ticket via Eventix; that guarantees entry, and the marquee nights (ADE, New Year's Eve, special bookings) genuinely sell out. When presale's gone, a limited number of door tickets go on sale, but presale and guestlist queues jump ahead, so arrive early if you're gambling on the door. For resale, use TicketSwap (capped at 120%) and skip anyone selling on the street. The door isn't about labels β€” but suits, dress shirts, football shirts and anything discriminatory get refused, and the no-flash / no-phone-torch rule is enforced to the point of ejection. You may be searched on the way in.

Practical. Doors from 23:00, running until at least 06:00, with the door shutting at 04:00 β€” no entry after, so don't turn up at half-four. Strictly 18+ with ID. Payment is cashless, cards only. Getting there is part of the ritual: hop the free GVB ferry from behind Amsterdam Centraal to Buiksloterweg β€” a few minutes across the IJ β€” and the A'DAM Toren is right at the landing. Shelter is down the staircase behind a steel door in the basement.

A couple of honest unknowns: there's no reliable published capacity, and there isn't a single official price page β€” budget roughly €15-30 for a regular night, more for ADE/NYE, and confirm per event on Eventix or RA. Big names like Ben Klock and Nina Kraviz have played, but treat them as notable past bookings, not residents.

Worth it? If you want Amsterdam's proper underground β€” dark room, big system, crowd that came to dance and not to film β€” Shelter delivers, and the ferry crossing to Noord makes it feel like a small pilgrimage. If you want bottle service, a view, or a phone-friendly night, look elsewhere. Come for the music, get there before four, and let the screens stay in your pocket.
